FILMS

Where in the World is Osama bin Laden? (12A*)
Director: Morgan Spurlock Origin: France Year: 2008 Duration: 90m

After revealing just what a diet of Big Macs can do to a person in SUPER SIZE ME, filmmaker Spurlock takes a tongue-in-cheek look at another threat to our collective wellbeing. When Spurlock's wife become pregnant, he feels that he wants his child to grow up in a safer world and so takes it upon himself to track down the most dangerous man on Earth, Osama bin Laden. Spurlock flies to the Middle East in search of his quarry, making stops in Egypt, Morocco, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan and Pakistan as he keeps an eye peeled for the head of Al Qaeda. When he isn't playing sleuth, he interviews people representing all walks of life, quizzing them about the nature of the post-9/11 conflict and the need for peace, in what proves to be a witty, inventive and illuminating documentary.

Persepolis (12A*)
Director: Marjane Satrapi, Vincent Paronnaud Origin: France Year: 2007 Duration: 96m Starring: Catherine Deneuve, Sean Penn, Chiara Mastroianni, Iggy Pop

An expressionistic animation stunningly drawn in black and white, PERSEPOLIS is a touching coming-of-age story about an intelligent, outspoken girl growing up during the Iranian revolution. Paronnaud and Satrapi's debut feature tells of how fundamentalists seized power, forced the veil on women and imprisoned thousands of dissidents. The film is based on Satrapi's series of graphic novels and her childhood experiences in Iran, where she survived traumatic encounters with schoolteachers bent on denying her expression, policemen determined to deny her freedom and Iraqi bombs intended to take her life. Dedicated to the people of Iran, PERSEPOLIS is a moving, universally appealing story of one woman's struggle against oppression that deservedly shared the jury prize at Cannes in 2007.

Happy-Go-Lucky (15)
Director: Mike Leigh Origin: United Kingdom Year: 2008 Duration: 118m Starring: Eddie Marsan, Sally Hawkins

Poppy (Hawkins) is an irrepressible 30-something enjoying her life in Camden. Whether out on her bike, preparing lessons for her primary school class, or drinking with friends in the local, she keeps a smile on her face and a joke on her lips. She is happy with her life and determined to get the most out of every day. When her bicycle is stolen, she decides to invest in driving lessons, which will bring her face-to-face with a character and a world view quite unlike her own. Compared with Leigh's previous works, HAPPY-GO-LUCKY presents a calmer, more optimistic take on contemporary Britain, where individualism and the pursuit of happiness define the lives of a generation, but where old-fashioned notions of community and selflessness still exist.

Garage (18)
Director: Leonard Abrahamson Origin: Ireland Year: 2007 Duration: 85m Starring: Anne-Marie Duff, Pat Shortt, Conor Ryan

GARAGE weaves tragedy with comedy to present a beautifully drawn tale from the margins of contemporary rural Irish life. Regarded by his neighbours as a harmless misfit, Josie (Shortt) has spent all his adult life as the caretaker of a crumbling petrol station. One summer his world suffers a shift when a teenager, David (Ryan), comes to work with him. Initially performing their menial tasks in silence, they tentatively open up, and suddenly Josie is drinking cans by the railway tracks with the local kids. This awakens dormant needs in Josie, leading to his awkward tilt at intimacy with shop girl Carmel (Duff). Tender though never sentimental, this tautly scripted, naturalistically photographed film withstands comparison to the work of the Dardenne brothers.

The Spirit of the Beehive (PG)
Director: Victor Erice Origin: Spain Year: 1973 Duration: 98m Starring: Fernando Gómez, Teresa Gimpera, Ana Torrent, Isabel Telleria

Widely regarded as a masterpiece of Spanish cinema, this allegorical tale is set in a remote village in the 1940s. The life in the village is calm and uneventful -- as is Spanish life after General Franco's victory in the Civil War. While their father (Fernando Fernán Gómez) studies bees in his beehive and their mother (Teresa Gimpera) writes letters to a non-existent correspondent, two young girls, Ana (Ana Torrent) and Isabel (Isabel Telleria), go to see James Whale's Frankenstein at a local cinema. Though they can hardly understand the concept, both girls are deeply impressed with the moment when a little girl gives a flower to the monster. Isabel, the older sister, tells Ana that the monster actually exists as a spirit that you can't see unless you know how to approach him. Ana starts wandering around the countryside in search of the kind creature. Instead, she meets an army deserter, who is hiding in a barn. The film received critical accolades for its subtle and masterful use of cinematic language and the expressive performance of the young Ana Torrent.

The Devil's Backbone (15)
Director: Guillermo Toro Origin: Spain Year: 2001 Duration: 106m Starring: Eduardo Noriega, Marisa Paredes

As the Spanish Civil War draws to its close, ten-year-old Carlos (Fernando Tielve) is abandoned at a remote orphanage. Harassed by the boys there, Carlos starts to uncover the orphanage's murky history and the shady connections between its staff. Favouring character-driven, emotional investment over cheap shocks, THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE is an unpredictable horror that builds towards a surprising and truly exciting conclusion.

Rambo (18)
Director: Sylvester Stallone Origin: United States Year: 2008 Duration: 91m Starring: Sylvester Stallone

It's 20 years since Rambo (Stallone) helped Mujahedeen rebels fend off Soviet invaders in Afghanistan, and these days the former soldier lives a simple life in northern Thailand. Rambo has long since traded his guns for a fishing reel, but the world's longest-running civil war rages into its 60th year on the nearby Thai-Burma border. One day, human-rights missionaries Sarah (Benz) and Michael Bennett (Schulze) show up asking Rambo to guide them up the land-mined Salween so they can deliver much needed food and medical supplies to the desperate Karen tribe. At first Rambo flatly refuses to cross into Burma, but those refugees will most certainly die without aid and he eventually relents. Following ROCKY BALBOA, the unlikely renaissance of Stallone continues in this thoroughly enjoyable and characteristically gung-ho yarn.

Four Minutes (15)
Director: Chris Kraus Origin: Germany Year: 2006 Duration: 112m Starring: Hannah Herzsprung, Monica Bleibtreu

Miss Krüger (Bleibtreu), a bitter woman in her 70s, has been teaching classical piano to prison inmates for years and takes on the challenge of training a talented but self-destructive young prisoner, Jenny. Jenny has killed a man. However, she is also an accomplished musician who gets the chance to represent the prison at a national competition. But to achieve this, Krüger and Jenny must come together to overcome the prison authority, a haunted past and their resistance to one another. Director Kraus's engaging film was six years in the making and turned from an international co-production into a smaller German gem, with strong performances from two of Germany's best actresses at its heart.

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (12A*)
Director: Julian Schnabel Origin: France Year: 2008 Duration: 112m Starring: Marie-Josee Croze, Anne Consigny, Emmanuelle Seigner, Mathieu Amalric

Schnabel's third feature following BASQUIAT and BEFORE NIGHT FALLS recounts the remarkable true story of Jean-Dominique Bauby (Amalric), charismatic editor of French Elle magazine, who at the age of 43 suffered a stroke that rendered his brain stem inactive. He awoke from a coma to find himself a victim of locked-in syndrome: mentally alert but physically paralysed. His only means of communicating was by blinking his left eye. He was forced to look into himself for two other things that weren't paralysed, his imagination and his memory. He learned a blinking code for each letter of the alphabet and he painstakingly told the story of a profound adventure into the human psyche.
