I had finished shopping for my Christmas outfit in TKMaxx and was looking forward to getting home and trying on my new glad rags. It was a cold and wet night and to keep myself warm I imagined myself dancing with the beautiful people in Edwards on a Friday night - but it wasn't doing the job - I needed something more. I turned right onto Easter Road and before long I was being lured by the welcoming lights of Middletons.
There was the usual after work drinkers standing by the bar, and one or two who seemed to have finished work early - early in 1982!
It was warm and comfortable so I decided to stay for a pint - and good value it was too, just a little over £2. I took a seat, it was quite busy, but I imagine that you will find a seat whenever you come (except maybe when there's football on). The bar was clean, and the staff, in their traditional uniforms (with aprons) were friendly and knowledgeable and served me a great looking pint of Guiness with a smile. The pint cost £2.15, much cheaper than in the town centre which is about £2.50 plus per pint of Guiness.
The toilets were average, but I've seen worse. And I'll give them the benefit of the doubt., as Middletons is now approaching its hundredth birthday ! The quality of the beer was good and the choice is not bad either.
During my quick pint, a man came round selling fish and crabs etc. from a small box but it must have been for his regular customers only as sadly I wasn't offered a chance to peruse the contents of his catch. However, on the plus side it had a nice open fire to warm yer cockles and a nice range of bar snacks including the now hard-to-find Walkers Beef n Onion flavour crisps. :)
Verdict: Working man's pub. Friendly but I'm sure the punters see the odd argument every now and then. Good for a chat over a few pints.
