Frankensteins pub, Edinburgh This chain pub (they also have one in Glasgow and Aberdeen) offer great eating in their bar, restaurant and nightclub facilities. As you would imagine the pub is decked out in a Frankensteins horror movie theme and looks like the inside of a church, which it no doubt was in a former life.

Offers lots of cocktails such as The Frankenstein (Midori, Vladivar Vodka, Blue Curacao, Orange Juice and Grenadine) and The Bride of Frankenstein (Tia Maria, Kahlua, Baileys, Milk, cream and Chocolate sauce) and has special offers on pitchers like 2 for 1 and free Guinness promotions.

There is also plenty of food available - you can start the day with Frankenstein's exclusive Monster Breakfast. Coming in Scottish, Canadian or Italian style as well as a vegetarian option, you are sure to find it a satisfying start to the day. Served on weekdays from 10am until 12pm and until 9pm at weekends.

It attracts a lot of young and lively revellers on Friday and Saturday nights. Quite loud with the latest chart tunes plus special features such as a bit where a monster appears in the middle of the pub (or was that the bird I was chatting up), and where the very ornate ceiling opens up to reveal a surprise.

Visit the Frankensteins Pub, Edinburgh web site at http://www.frankenstein-pub.co.uk/ed_home.htm for drinks & cocktails list, pictures, a virtual tour and much more.

You can contact them by email at edinburgh@frankenstein-pub.co.uk

Verdict: Very lively multi-floor pub. Well worth a visit.

YOUR COMMENTS ON FRANKENSTEINS PUB

Submitted by Hilary´s Lucky Afternoon on Thursday, August 19, 2010:
This is a decent enough pub apart from all the bloody 18-20 year old students. It sometimes feels like an after-school club. Fairly good drinks prices and the banter isn´t too shabby. Not been there in a year or two mind so things might´ve changed.

lovely place

Went in to this place after not being there for a while and was pleasantly surprised!

Went for a work function on Thursday and while the place is a bit expensive the DJ was awesome and had a great time.

Submitted by Jim on Monday, December 17, 2007:
I should also add that the food was great, the place was very clean, and the staff courteous and pleasant.

And I did notice that the patrons in Scottish pubs do like to drink--a lot. So for the Frankenstein staff to still remain courteous with them is something they can be proud of.

Submitted by Jim on Monday, December 17, 2007:
I would like to start off by asking, "What is with all the negative comments about this great place?"

I went to Frankenstein as a tourist from Toronto, Canada-two years in a row, and I have to say that this is the best bar/pub that I have ever been to.

I am a lifelong fan of classic horror movies and the people of Edinburgh are very lucky to have an awesome themed place like this filled with wonderful rare and vintage Hammer Horror and Universal Monster memorabilia and props.

We certainly do not have any themed establishments like this in Canada other than Planet Hollywood, which isn´t very good and is very overpriced.

This establishment cost millions of dollars to open (I asked the management)and prepare, so if you don´t like the prices, don´t go! I actually found it to be one of the less expensive places to go to while on my trip.

Perhaps I am biased becuase I love the atmosphere-where else can you eat and drink in a place that resembles a museum of classic horror? Obviously there are a lot of natives of the country who don´t appreciate this sort of thing. Why not move to Canada where you won´t find anything unique and fun like this?

Submitted by dave on Thursday, September 27, 2007:
frankenstein is not expensive, its the same price as everywhere else around it. plus a third off on mondays for students, you cant complain!
Submitted by john on Tuesday, July 31, 2007:
who own,s it?
Submitted by Houdini on Thursday, July 26, 2007:
One word..... Awesome!!!!

I may be a regular so a little bit bias, but there´s a good reason why I go there a lot!

DJs at the weekend play some great cheese as well!

Submitted by Sarah on Thursday, July 19, 2007:
Hi there, just thought id leave a comment on how awesome ur pub is, great night had by all last friday, and my hen party all tought the same too!! thanks all the staff!!
Submitted by Kathy McKenzie on Thursday, July 12, 2007:
Hey there, I came to Edinburgh from Fife on monday and came into Frankensteins, it was one of the coolest pubs I´ve ever been to, the whole theme of it was so original and we had a really great meal there. Awesome staff too, really friendly and chatty with me and my friend.
Submitted by BobbyDazzler on Thursday, July 05, 2007:
I don´t care what people say about this place, yes it´s expensive but its free to get in, there´s a good DJ and the music is some great cheese.

oh and buy one get one free on the fajitas on wednesday is a proper bargain!!!

Submitted by Andy on Sunday, June 24, 2007:
Frankies is awesome, great food all the time, the bar staff are really friendly and the best party atmosphere in Edinburgh. A must see place for everyone.
Submitted by Fantastic Fanny on Monday, April 02, 2007:
Miss "maybe a bit too upper class for you" Ellie is the reason why Frankensteins is not all it could be. The drinks are expensive because mugs like her pay the prices and the owners laugh all the way to the bank. Much like Opium Lounge.
But all in all the Frankenstein Pub is not all gloom and doom. The lunchtime food is really quite good, and it does have a friendly atmosphere most of the time. I agree with previous comments about the noise in the evenings. It´s excessively loud like a nightclub.
They do a nice selection of shooters too.
A nice place for lunch or a few in the evening but to not to make a night of it.

Submitted by Ellie on Sunday, March 25, 2007:
To all of you b******s that insist Frankensteins is a shit hole, get your heads tested. Kev Q in particular needs to see a shrink. You say this place is a ´shit hole´ simply because the drink cost you £5.50. Now then, that doesn´t make it a shit hole, just a bit expensive. In fact, surely that suggests its far from being shit, maybe a bit too upper class for you!
Submitted by Absolutely Dynamic Diane on Tuesday, February 20, 2007:
Fantastic food but the drinks are a bit on the pricey side. That animatronic Franky made me shat my pants the first time.
Submitted by Kev Q on Tuesday, January 09, 2007:
I have to agree with most of the other comments - yes, it is ridiculously expensive, £5.50 for a double vodka without a mixer if my memory serves me correctly which is one of the reasons why i will not be going back to this shit hole any time soon.

Also, the music is too loud considering how small the place is, you have to shout over it to have a chat with your mates. I don´t mind this in a nightclub but not in a pub. It´s full of msotly hen and stag partys which are always bad news on a night out. The place is really tacky and as mentioned in a previous comment, it does resemble a themed pub you would find in Disneyland or something.

I didn´t stay around long enough to see the anamatronic Frankenstein but to be honest, i could not give a fuck.

Submitted by buntycaws on Monday, August 14, 2006:
Frankies is a decent place during the afternoon. Great food such as the decent priced platters. At night it´s not such a good place. As someone has said the music a bit out of place. It just doesn´t feel right. And the drink was really quit expensive from what I remember. Not the worst place in Edinburgh on a weekend night but certainly far from the best.
So in conclusion: good place to go for some grub and a few pints in the afternoon before heading out somewhere else for the night.

FRANKENSTEINS IS A SHIT HOLE!!!!!!!!! ONLY GO IF YOU GET PAID 2 GRAND A WEEK, TRUST ME, YOU´LL NEED IT!!!!!! STAFF ARE UP THEMSELVES AND VERY VERY RUDE, MUSIC IS SO OUT OF PLACE IT´S NOT FUNNY (NED BEATS) IF HELL WAS A PUB, THIS BAR WOULD BE IT......SHIT FOOD TOO.

Very good nite there except when this Irish Girl called Deirdre O´Hairy came in, still in her straight jacket, and fell over onto Frankenstein. I think she may now be pregnant with his child.
Submitted by MC Mike on Monday, October 31, 2005:
It´s a decent place at the weekend to fill in between pubs in the afternoon and clubs at night. They have some good shots in test tubes that are probably extortionate but we´ve always been too pished to notice. Every now and then they have an animatronic Frankenstein who comes down from the ceiling to some great overture and flashing lights which scares the shit out of you the first time. Also Nurse Frankenstein raises the sexymeter a few notches.
They food is excellent. Especially the platter. It´s so good I´d even take your mum there for dinner (again). Good for a quite lunch during the week too.

I can´t believe soo many people have bad things to say about this pub. I´ve lived in Edinburgh for 4 years and have sampled many of its pubs. Frankensteins remains my favourite! ok it is a bit pricey but i´d rather pay extra to experience the surroundings, atmosphere and of course frankies visit at 12 than sit in a pokey bar with no atmosphere and a balding old man and his dog!!

Haven´t been there since 2001, but I recall it being a great place. I still don´t know how I feel about garlic-mayo on fried potatos (chips/fries/whatever).

Was lucky enough to have a night out here at Haloween..
It was great and one of the best nights i,ve ever had .
We were also lucky enough to see ´Frankie´ rise from the dead..and the staff were up on the bar dancing and shaking tambourines...
Cheesey,but a great laugh.
I seem to remeber drinking some really scarey cocktails..

Best avoided during the day. I´ve been there four times and on each occasion the food was terrible and the service was worse. Someday I’ll learn my lesson.

No idea how it is for a night out, though.

drinks are overpriced- but arent they everywhere in edinburgh? it is cramped but it adds to ´atmosphere´. men are old and sleazy, but trying to run away proves fun. same music every weekend, get bored by the 2nd time they play song. ok to start the evening off- but leave- quickly.
Submitted by Bobby on Tuesday, April 20, 2004:
Something for the easily lured tourists! I am a resident of Edinburgh since 2003 and Frankensteins is one of the most ´soul-less´ pubs I´ve ever attended. Step inside and you may think you ended up in some dodgy AMERICAN commercialised pub in Disneyland...

My advice: - Don´t!

Submitted by scotty on Saturday, April 17, 2004:
Yeah, the bouncers are twats
Submitted by Mr Man on Tuesday, April 13, 2004:
Well, a lot of mixed comments...I love this pub...it is true, drinks are fairly expensive, but there are loads of promotions throughout the week and if you have a snapfax you automntically get 25% off food and drink...so to those of you who complain: stop complaining, use your brain (and eyes, the promo is displayed all over Edinburgh). Finally, I am happy to accept the following comment: "staff seem to have been picked on looks", however as a curreent employee, I am particularly offended by all of the negative comments about staff. Apart from 3, possibly 4 people out of 40 working in the pub, staff are all friendly, experienced and good at their jobs. Can you really expect a barman to get it right everytime when you have a bar regularly containing 600+ people? If I have one comment to make, it is that there are far too many ´moaners´ in a on weekend...despite them, it´s great place to party!
Submitted by Chalie-Boy on Thursday, April 08, 2004:
Over priced, Dirty, Talentless bar staff, I still go here sometimes but I get a student discount but its still over priced. The tarts behind the bar are well worth a look but bouncers remind me of a retard school, they said something but I didn´t make it out, better head to other bars around if you like to have a conversation but if your one of these people who just like to stand and stare at people then just stay here.

Submitted by Jane on Friday, November 07, 2003:
I love Frankensteins. It is a pub which is full of character and fun. They tend to play great retro music, anything from the 1980´s and 90´s to get people up and dancing. The food is also fantastic and reasonably priced. The cocktails are brilliant although expensive. The price of drinks are my only gripe. It really is a nice relaxed pub.
Submitted by Edinburgh Bartender on Friday, November 07, 2003:
If you like tacky theme pubs you´ll like this. Personally, I hate it. Est. 1818 my arse, they only get away with this because they opened at 6.18 pm. The identikit staff seem to have been picked on looks alone and seem to have problems with anything other than opening a Bacardi Breezer. The low lighting does hide the worst of the grime though.
