A very traditional pub in the heart of the Grassmarket, the Black Bull is now back! It has recently emerged from behind it's cocoon of polythene and scaffolding. If you've browsed through this pub guide you will notice that a lot of Edinburgh pubs are rather old, the Black Bull is one of the oldest. Other old ones are The White Hart Inn, The Golf Tavern and the Sheip Heid.
The decor is very nice with wooden floors and nice red leather seating. Very much a community pub, the Black Bull does some fine ales such as Belhaven and guest ales such as Orkney Dark Island and Spitfire. There are draught lagers with Tennents being the cheapest at £1.95 a pint. For a bite to eat there are baked potatoes and ploughmans aplenty with an average dish costing only £2-£3.50 and food is served from noon until 6pm.

Submitted by Marty Heppler on Thursday, January 11, 2007: Sounds like yer ma Submitted by Ray on Sunday, January 07, 2007: In this pub, I danced with someone after 12 o’clock on the Hogmanay. Her eyes and glance are most beautiful and she told me that she made her journey from somewhere far away. However, I did not even manage to catch her name before my ignorance and my friends took me away. Now the memory of her glance is fading away in time, like tears in rain. I hope that this message finds her well, I hope that she still has recollection of it, and I hope to meet her again next Hogmanay or maybe these are only wishes. After an initial introduction you´ll spend half a day testing your might on the draughts and cocktails. It´s a fun filled afternoon where you not only learn about your own bar skills but you also drink what you´ve made.
