A very gothic, macabre-themed drinking den, a bit like walking into a dungeon in a Hammer Horror movie. The walls are covered in bats and cobwebs and it is crammed with skulls and skeletons! With its' dark, opressive decor and chilly atmosphere, this pub is ideal for a Halloween carry on or a post or pre match drink to one of the cities Ghost tours or after a trip to the Edinburgh Dungeon. You can try the seven deadly sins challenge where you have to drink your way through all seven of their scary house cocktails. Or for something more sedate go along there to recover with a lovely Sunday roast. Some may say a smallish pub bit with a big atmosphere. It has a big TV so good for sport and the ale's not bad too!
The pub gets it name from the local legend of Maggie Dickson, who survived a hanging. Ask inside and look on the walls for a fuller description of this chilling tale.
The clientele is a lively mix of local and students and it can be quite busy at weekends. You even get the odd live rock music in here, so check local listings for what's on. There is a quiz night on Mondays. Open Mon-Sun 9am-1am

Submitted by CHARON on Tuesday, August 26, 2008: Good service, but the food........yeeucchhhh. We had the combo, thought that couldn´t be bad - wrong, it was greeeaaasssssy. Submitted by Eunice Pearson on Friday, February 29, 2008: This pub has the dirtiest floor I have ever seen in any establishment in Edinburgh. Indeed I couldn´t put my shopping bags down on it - dirt build-up along the walls and litter (including cigarette ends - where did they come from in a non-smoking establishment?) lying all over the floor. This was around noon today, so I have to assume they don´t employ cleaners. Makes me wonder just how clean their kitchen is ...
Added to that - despite the fact that there were only 2 other customers in the pub (and they seemed to have been waiting for some time) - I had to wait 10 minutes for a double Espresso.
I would recommend that you remove MAGGIE DICKSON´S from your list of recommended pubs in Edinburgh.
I have never written in with a complaint about any establishment before, but was quite disgusted when I looked around.

Submitted by Debbi on Monday, June 18, 2007: My sister took me on a trip to Edinburgh for the 2002 Fringe Festival. Our hotel was right across the street from Maggie DIckson´s, and we spent a lot of our free time there. Absolutely LOVED the place. Great atmosphere, everyone who worked there that we encountered was extremely good natured (and understanding of our American idiocy, hehe). I will DEFINITELY be returning here when I come back to Edinburgh! Submitted by Steve on Friday, March 23, 2007: Fish and chips was great! Submitted by moe on Monday, November 20, 2006: when will your next live rock nite be Submitted by Gaëlle on Monday, October 02, 2006: Such a good Haggis! A great pub! Thanks Submitted by sheena desborough on Monday, September 18, 2006: we visited scotland for a week, so we decided to go to edinburgh castle. After which would wanted food. We look in this pub and went in cause it was friendly we had a drink and a bite to eat. My family and myself thought it was wonderful place. Staff were polite and the food was excellent. If i ever go back to scotland i would to be sure to go back to maggie dickson´s plus the story of her was facinating. Submitted by chris on Saturday, August 12, 2006: We had a nice lunch there on Friday. Great wrought iron bar rail, attractive wait staff, interesting atmosphere. Maggie´s story is worth the stop. Submitted by bob on Tuesday, August 08, 2006: i had a breakfast there as well... black grime was disgusting.. unwell after it. last time i have anything there... poor show from the kitchen. let me know where else that chef works so as i can avoid eating there Submitted by I rate customer on Tuesday, August 08, 2006: mice were seen wondering on the floor at lunch time... i walked straight back out... yuk Submitted by Pete on Friday, March 24, 2006: Takes its name from half-hangit Maggie Dickson who survived an attempt to hang her outside but otherwise no connection
to her. The bar staff could be friendlier and the breakfasts are covered in black grime from the remains of previous breakfasts. Could do better. Submitted by Becky on Thursday, March 23, 2006: Absolutely my favorite pub! I will definitely return and its a great place to go in with your friends and attempt to drink the 7 deadly sins and seven virtues, along with Maggie´s tale! The live music isn´t bad either! Submitted by Steve on Tuesday, December 27, 2005: Great atmosphere, good food Submitted by Cheyanne and Ms.minor on Monday, October 03, 2005: it is the best food ever u da bomb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Submitted by Alan on Monday, September 12, 2005: Appalling food. When the menu says "seasonal vegetables" it actually means frozen mixed vegetables, and they even overcook those. Unless this place has gone downhill very quickly, the other reviews must have been written by the staff. If you don´t believe me, take a risk and check it out, but don´t say I didn´t warn you. Submitted by steve on Saturday, July 23, 2005: absolutely my favorite pub in the whole of Edinburgh...every time I get to visit that fine city it´s my first drink. Plus the staff are attractive and like us Canadians Submitted by Maggie on Thursday, April 21, 2005: Awesome, a pub and I share the same name! It´s the first stop on my visit to Edinburgh Submitted by Kev on Monday, October 11, 2004: Charlie is a legend! great pub, great manager Submitted by David on Monday, April 26, 2004: Their pub-lunch was the best I´ve had in Edinburgh! Submitted by Gavin on Wednesday, September 24, 2003: Food was great, drink was great and the staff were friendly and efficient - well worth a visit
