The Last Drop Tavern pub, EdinburghThe Last Drop takes its' name from the fact that the last public hanging in Scotland was conducted outside. It is reputed that the executioner took the condemned man to this pub for a drink just before hanging him. There is a drink in here called the 'Executioner cocktail' which is a potent mix of strong cider and strong ale.

Inside there is lots of olde-worlde paraphanalia and decor with lots of rope to be found. A traditional pub with a rather sinister theme that attracts a fair share of tourists. Friendly bar staff and great haggis, neeps and tatties and quite a good pint of Guiness too. Well worth a visit.

James the manager was my sugar daddy for 5 years and i want to tell my story

I don´t understand some of the comments here that sing such high praises of this place. The last Drop is just your average, slightly smelly wee pub. The manager does seem to have a bit of a chip on his shoulder.

I met a great guy called Lee in this pub a few months ago. He was working doing the place up and we shared a couple of very passionate nights together!!! Lee if you´re reading this it´s Aussie Susan and get in touch if you still have my number!!!

I´ve been in Edinburgh a few months now, and I´ve never had a bad experience in The Last Drop. The prices are a little steep, but there isn´t another pub nearby with as much character as The Last Drop.

TERRIBLE ATMOSPHERE

Seedy little pub and I agree with other reviewers on the manager - Jimmy - whose comments below tell you how he really is. Avoid this one.

I was at the last drop in January of 05 and i have to tell you, it was my favourite pub in Scotland. i had a blast there! jimmy was wonderful, kind, funny and generous. Anyone who thinks otherwise better check his drink.
Submitted by Donal on Monday, October 01, 2007:
Thought this pub was great. Had a magic afternoon in it relaxing with copious amounts of alcohol. It was a stepping stone to the Burke and Hare which is truly the ultimate in bars

TERRIBLE MANAGER.
I agree with the other reviewers. The manager, Jimmy, spoils this place. His comment below sums up his character. Avoid this pub unless you enjoy feeling tense when you´re having a drink.

I visited the Last Drop, Apr 06 and found that it was quite busy with a variety of people in comparison to the other pubs in and around the Grass Market - really strange as at one point i was the only women in a bar a few doors down ! i need to replace a t shirt i purchased from the Last Drop as i had an accident with a bottle of bleach on a t shirt that wasnt mine - if anyone has a Xlarge mens to sell that would save me flying back to Edinburgh.
Submitted by Conny on Tuesday, April 24, 2007:
I think the Last Drop has a nice atmosphere and so far I have had only good experiences with staff, food etc. so I was surprised by the bad reviews.

At the moment I am actually doing a short customer survey about the ´Last Drop´ for a uni report. If you would like to share your opinion I’d really appreciate it if you could follow this link:

just back from the rugby weekend. cannot understand all the negative comments! found bar excellent, food varied and enjoyable and staff most friendly and pleasant. i for one will be back - frequently!

HA ha is funny that everyone is slagging off james. I worked in the bar for years and used to love it. Getting aleft in charge meant that we were always evry stoned or pissed every night on shift. we ripped off the bar something terrible. Happy days

I use the Last Drop for my Saturday lunch, the Staff and Management have been very good to myself and wife for many years. It is a wonderful pub. The manager does keep very good control of his pub and will not tolerate unacceptable behaviour, this is to ensure YOUR enjoyment is not spoilt. The management of the other pubs I use should follow his example and not just tolerate bad language etc just because their passing money over the bar.

great place, preat history. Visited on June the 29th. Chills down the spine. History enlarges the tiny pub.

BAD VIBES
What an awful little place! I agree with the comments on this site about the manager. He has personality problems that make any visit unpleasant. Not representative of the other good pubs in the city. PS/ regarding the last post, jusging by the reviews of the Last Drop, I wouldn´t imagine your mug is going to be worth very much.

Submitted by debra on Saturday, October 28, 2006:
I just purchased a puter mug with a glass bottom which depicts someone being hung with a carrage in the background and has the words The Last Drop below the art. Can you tell me how old this mug may be and the value. Thank, Deb

MANAGER FROM HELL.
I agree with the last comments. Jimmy´s wife worked at the Granary in Edinburgh too. The two of them seem to take a pleasure out of making other people´s lives miserable; judging and putting people down within the pub community in Edinburgh. I know many staff who weren´t in favour were made to feel awful. I think the unsuspecting public who visit this place should know the unhappiness that is caused by this manager on both sides of the bar. Giving this pub your money simply helps managers like these continue to take out their aggression on others.

Submitted by Stuart Gilroy on Friday, October 27, 2006:
I quit my job at the Last Drop Pub due to the bullying of the red-haired manager, Jimmy. I´ve read other reviews of this pub on various sites and many of them highlight the bigotry or prejudice of this man. I left after months of being criticised and followed around as he double-checked my work and made my life hell.

The pub itself is a below average watering hole and, having had inside knowledge of the way they prepare food, I´d take your anti-biotics along just in case.

There are plenty of lovely, friendly little places to eat and drink in Edinburgh. Avoid this one...

Have to say that the pubs pretty average ! good for the odd pint but not for much else . i would rate it at about 6 out of 10 ! get yourself over to rush, one pound for selective pints but the bouncer could do with being sacked ! slam
Submitted by Stevey on Tuesday, March 07, 2006:
The manager holds a freestyle wrestling contest in his bedroom above the pub every Tuesday night at 7.

I worked at the Last Drop in 1996 and still miss it! Can´t wait to come back and have a pint of Caulder´s Creamy Ale (do they still sell it??). Will i still find darren and duncan propping up the bar when i finally make it??

We´ve been coming to the last drop for a number of years at the end of december and have found it a very friendly and enjoyable experience. Great atmosphere and very friendly manager and staff even to kids! love it !

DO NOT GIVE THIS PUB YOUR CUSTOM!
As someone who works in a pub I have had to deal with some rather obnoxious customers and even thrown some out but I have never done this to someone who has accidently knocked over a glass of water, on their own table, while in to have a pub lunch. However that was excuse enough for the manager of this so called ´pub´ to threaten my friend and his work colleagues (all off whom I assure you are very nice and were completely sober at the time!) and get them to leave. There are plenty of other good pubs in Edinburgh, hundreds nearby, so I suggest if you are in the Grassmarket go to another pub! Quite frankly if I acted like that to a customer I would be sacked!

Submitted by EdinburghBornAndBred on Monday, February 06, 2006:
One of the worst pubs in Edinburgh (and I´ve been to most). It´s main selling point being the friendly staff and the good student deals!!! Are they serious?! The staff were obnoxious, the drinks and food too expensive for what they were, the beer tasted like watered down dregs and there was not a single student in sight (although maybe not a bad thing)! That was my first time in the Lost Drip and will surely be the last. There are numerous better pubs on the Grassmarket and over the whole of edinburgh for students and non-students alike. Definitely one to avoid!
Submitted by LoughboroughBlade on Monday, February 06, 2006:
A traditional pub with a rather sinister theme"

Emphasis on the sinister then. The behaviour of the staff over the weekend was utterly deplorable. What a pity given the positive experiences others have clearly had in the past.

Submitted by A disappointed Scot on Monday, February 06, 2006:
If you would like to be insulted and sworn at by the bar staff, then thrown out for accidentally spilling water, then I recommend “The Last Drop.” For a pub that offers friendly deals to students, I found it slightly ironic that the ‘ginger-haired’ apparent manager takes such a dislike to ‘kids.’ Unfortunately I cannot comment on the food, we had barely ordered when we were asked to leave. This place tarnishes the friendly image of Scotland. AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE.
Submitted by Kris on Monday, January 09, 2006:
My friends from the art college and I always liked popping over to The Last Drop for a pint and a bite during lunch hour. In fact, a few times we skived off the afternoon entirely to stay for a few more!

The staff is friendly, the drink specials are good for students, and the atmosphere is lovely. Highly recommended!

Our son Richard Ellis works at The Last Drop. He has not been in contact in some time and we have no other way of knowing if he is still working there. If he is still there could you please ask if he could contact us. Murray Ellis

While living in Edinburgh for two years, The Last Drop is (together with The Mitre) was my favourite pub: although a bit smallish and at times too busy, the atmosphere is always great and the staff very helpful and friendly. They serve the best haggis in Edinburgh and apparently, Sean Connery´s drops in whenever he is in Edinburgh.
Submitted by Sam C on Sunday, November 27, 2005:
This pub has the best atmosphere in the whole grassmarket not to metion the best staff. Loved working there and can´t wait till i get the chance to get back to the place!!!!!
P.S. Keep it up Alex

Great pub, good food, great Guiness and friendly (good lookihg) staff. A late lunch can easily turn into an all day and night session.
P.S. When the Bristol Lady finds an atmospheric, spacious, clean, pot pouri infused PUB, with thin doormen, can I ask that she keep it a secret so she can drink on her own - please.

Submitted by Bristol Lady on Tuesday, March 01, 2005:
Apart from the fact that space has more of an atmosphere than this pub, the terribly cramped drinking area is dirty and the whole pub smells funny. Not to pick out individuals but i must comment also on the very large (fat) and very very rude doorman who ignored us and stood about like he had somethin better to do. Do not, DO NOT, pick this bar as a part of a night out. Good luck...

Submitted by Eric on Thursday, October 02, 2003:
The Last Drop is a great wee pub. There is always a good atmosphere and the staff are very friendly. Can usually be the only bar in the Grassmarket with a Q outside it. Can tend to get a little busy at the weekend, so get in early and get a seat.
