 Do you remember Whistle Binkies when it was a small, sweaty and dirty late night basement bar, and crammed with punters looking for somewhere to have more beer? Most of customers probably don't remember much through the drunken heaving haze - but despite all that a good night was sometimes to be had.Well now all that has changed ! Whistle Binkies is now a venue in its own right - you will even get a receipt for your £3 entry fee (gone are the days when the bouncers just pocketed your entry fee !). The place is now twice as big and so a lot more spacious - It looks like they've knocked into the basement next door. The place has had a complete makeover and I have to say that it looks, well........good. The sub-basement snugs are still there - I didn't get much of a chance to fully check them out last Friday night, but there were people in there and they seemed to be enjoying themselves, so I guess that they are good as well. There is now a proper (although small ) dancefloor at the far end of the bar, just in front of the stage. There is still live music 7 nights a week - seems like it is still a venue for small local bands. The toilets have also had a makeover and are a lot cleaner. Unfortunately the cost of a drink seems to have gone up, to pay for it all - but not too much from what I remember the cost of a pint was about £2.80 (correct me if I'm wrong). Verdict: Pay a visit - you'll be surprised…

well thats the end of silly season all the shows come to an end for another year:) well done to all the binkies staff who have coped with style thank u guys:) back to some normality how good were safehouse on saturday :O diffrent set one or 2 of the old faves still in there though :)binks was heavinggg so busy i think Geds bands back in this sat a big thank u to steven for moving the barrel for me if u havent been to binks yet why noo come along mixed ages great bands and some potent lemon it gives the alkeehol a wee kick :D

i have the mother of all colds grrr :S but on a brighter note how good were used blues on sat night at ye olde binks :D we all kind of debated the band name thinking at first it was hughs blues nice to see shorty rodgers and big robbie the pict enjoying the music the bar staff working there wee sox of clearing after the festival show to get all the tables back i of course managed to slink in and take up residence at my barrel :)size queen on at the 9 slot watched this band many times over the last few years and never tire of them well done guys u rock as always :)

sat at ye olde binkies the festival has arrived some comedy in binks b4 the bands started , running all threw august i did manage to get my barrel though yaay :) main street blues band were on with a new line up i have to say i realy enjoyed the band my bits were shaken and stirred ,well done the bar staff these guys cope with style and dam can thay cut up lemons :D see u sat mind no geds band for a month

wee Ged on sounds last sat i wasent sure what band were on but the band that turned up was blues for pocket money good to see this band again. i like them havent seen the blues devils in a while where r u guyssssssss :)bar service great as always met some lovely people in this pub friendly mixed ages often stag nights or hens in still smiling about the guy in dress pink knicks and flip flops u dont get that everywhere hm :)stag night im assuming

couldnt make binks on sat :s but from what i hear main street blues came to the rescure filling in when the black jacks couldnt make it sadly the black jacks have split up im sad to hear this its one of the first bands i saw in binks and watched them many a time after that thay will be missed well done main street and i will be back at the barrel this sat yaayy :)

not so busy must be footy season so nice to see steven and all the lovely bar staff at binkies :) i was in for Ged hanleys band i like a wee sing along then Main street blues new line up bar the singer derek the original member of the band john bruce getting up with the band too good night i had to go to a party so missed badboogaloo one of my fave groups but friends of mine were there and said thay were great im looking forward to saturday already where i will be taking up residence at my barrel lol :)

i couldent stay long at binks on sat due to jim browns memorial gig but i saw Ged hanleys band and thennnn it was Gary johnstone this guy is fantastic he was born to play guitar glasgow band and a fan of mr stevie ray vaughns i could listen to Gary all night:)i missed badboogaloo but im sure thay had the place jumping the bar staff are a friendly bunch id not swap them for a puppy :) theres a mixed age group get urself along to binks see u there:)

hope ur weekend was as fun as mine at ye olde binks :) blues devils couldent make it thats a shame i was looking forward to seeing them. Those dangerous Gentlemen stepped in this band only been to gether a month first set was good but slowish but a belter of a second set thay settled in :)then Montana good band lady singer with great hair mentiiond that b4 :D great voice new bar staff in very helpfull the potent lemon was a bit short in supply i just recycled the bits i had my bit for the planet yaay :)

im of to a slow start this week reving up nicely though to the weekend yaay. Sat past it was midnightblues band so nice to see these guys again nice bunch of guys and not to be missed new numbers in there set good mix lads. Then the badboogaloo band noone can burst the strings like gordon (3in one sesh)this band has the bits shakin in aww directions nice croud in binks bar staff keeping everyone watered new sound guy i didint catch his name but i know it was wendys lad well done u :)

hiiii :D good to see jim back in ye olde binkies over an hour to get into binks stuck in traffic Ged Hanley band on when i got there and my barrel occupied but was soon into the shwwing of things after geds one hour gig it was the black jack bluessssssssss band now as u know i loves this band:)was gutted when thay got cut of prematurly:O next up was the street cars binks was busy and the bar staff did great i had half the lemon slice population in my glass:)nice to see lots of familar faces :)

first a farewell to Grant(yes annooo i called kenny him for 2 years) one of the lovely bar guys missin u already all the best to u and a big thank u :)x. annie stevenson in on friday i hear soz i didint make it lads one of the young upcoming bands. sat after geds band the deal loud and proud a few air geetars around then alma feira =^..^=what a band if u missed this band try see them normaly a later slot so great thay were on at 9 from smoke on the water 4 non blondes even pearl jam covers lady singer and wow can lynda belt out a tune some crazee dance moves on the floor tonight an no it wasent me shakin my bits:Pi was about hoarse from singing along great night and a big hi to the slidey gadget men see u next week :D

Mags, great to see you in on Saturday - it was different doing an early one (but we kept the place busy as usual.) I hope everyone enjoyed it? We had a bucketload of Iron Maiden fanclub members in too after a full day at an event a couple of doors down (of course I was also there from 2pm and then in binkies playing afterwards!).

band in at ten was jojocoke nice bunch o guys i like them i was in early doors to see the midnight blues band over the last couple of years iv seen this band quite a few times popular in binks and i always enjoy them steve playing gary moore songs with his sixpence is somthing to hear.its shame we cant have farters sent outside ones right someone was bad last night it could have gagged a maggot :) but a squirt o perfume and holding ur breath till u turn blue helps lol :D prob the same in most pubs binks is still the best pub in edin hi keith ( mr slidey gadget )and the lovely bar staff :)

not been in here for a while - the nickname "stinky binkies" is very apt. really need to sort out the drains - wafts of fragrant merde seems all around. average band in at 10ish on sat - usual covers. plenty tourists in but binkies seems to have lost a lot of the edge it used to have. bar staff did well though. worth visiting.

i had fun in ye olde binkies last night caught a wee bit o geds band but chris wasent there he got married yesterday so all the best to chris and his bride safe house in shaking up binkies this band just has u on ur feet bits going in aww directions:)yaay thenn the richt hoat chillis i loved them havent seen them b4 had a wee chat with rick(hope ur throats better) very energetic hope to see them back soon gordon on the sounds what a lovely guy and a big yayy to the great bar staff in ye olde binks a few glasses over yesterday but the bar staff had them cleared up fast thank u guys:Di didint make it long enough to see badboogaloo but there on a 9 slot soon ill catch up then heared big tuna were fun on the friday spoilt for choise at binks:)

busy at ye olde binkies Geds band back was in, i was in time to catch a couple o songs new guy on sounds gordon he did a great job and very friendly had a wee chat about sounds new hair doo one o the bar staff i think his names greg but i sook with names :) the deal were on next honestly guys i do go home i dont live in binks:P best chat up line o the night was wait for this one ladys yer arse is too wee i think u should go hame and have a pizza lol :D surely thats the worst everrrrr lee patterson up next i love lee and his wash boared and his original songs c u next week race u to the bar :D

safe house in last night what a great atmosphere everyone shaking there bits was also nice to see the guys from black jack blues in to see the band, john bruces hot hands somthing not to be missed :D i think it was a band called montana up next i enjoyed them to girly singer great hair do loved the red colour keith working his sox of on the slidey gadgets and the fab bar staff keeping the glasses cleared fast and every one watered lazy moo day for me today resting the bits for next week :)

friday at ye olde binkies dana dixon band, Dana has a strong voice and can belt out a tune with the mouthy i enjoyed seeing them havent caught up with this band in a while next up annie stevenson young guys but confidnt on stage loved watching there bass player his geetars so low u dont know how he can reach it reminds me of billy joe from greenday well done guys :) and hello to the great bar staff friendly and hard working :)come along to binkies music for everyone :)

i always enjoy my saturdays at ye olde binkies not often trouble in the pub once in a blue moon u get the odd edjit but i have to say in binks its delt with right away the bar staff are efficiant not only at serving drinks clearing tables and a wee banter but weeding out the edgit and polightly escorting him to the door ( hope it didint hit his ass on the way oot lol ) and making it a pleasant and enjoyable evening for us all thank u guys :) wee rosey blue in and the guys good to see u back :)

Jumped into a taxi on Saturday night and said "Whistle Binkies please" - Taxi Driver said "Stinky Binkies?" - I said "What do you mean? Have you ever been there?" "No" he answered (Grrr!). I englightened the poor soul by explaining how Whistle Binkies has been opened up into a fairly large venue with excellent bands and sound engineer, great crowd and terrific bar staff. Methinks he might just pop into Ye Olde Binkies on his next night off to see for himself just what he has been missing...............!!!

I heard a rumour that StreetCar are back in Binkies on 15th April. I remember them from the dark and dirty days. They may play covers but they can wind a cowd up !!

Quite happy to take our money and let us in but as soon as we had bought our first drink my friend and I were dragged out the back by our shirt collars and thrown onto the street, a kicking was coming but there was a taxi sitting there and the doorman with the glasses (who obviously couldnt take us without the back up of all his pals as he is a lang streak a pish) thought better of it. a fantastic venue for gigs!its design has fused a great bar with a live music edge! suitable for all typs of music,and as a sound engineer i am impressed with the balance of volume.the layout of the place makes it suitable for the volume to graduate louder from stage,to quiter but still listenable throughout the rest of the bar.i noticed that the speakers cover the whole venue which means a good audible balance can be maintained.("the sound system is class,and the engineers who have their work cut out for them,do a sterling job!check it out!!ps the bar staff are very polite.IT GOES UP TO 11.!

I have to say that I do remember when Binkies was half the size and a sweat pit, and to be honest I prefered it that way! Since it´s changed it has pulled in a much younger crowd and the live music has gone down hill drastically in my expectations. It´s so hit and miss now if you´re going to see a band worth listening to. It used to be my favourite place to go in Edinburgh but really I don´t frequent it at all now. I used to rave on about it and suggest it as a place to go for live music and a late drink, but not anymore - sorry!

I got in with my friends and i went to the toilet, the urinals were full and i dived into the cubical, i come out 1 minute later to find this ugly bouncer staring at me and uttering the words "this way please" embarrassingly i was escorted out infront of friends i had just met and i had no idea what was going on till outside he sied i was sick in the toilet and i wasnt barred but not to come back tonight, im not going back again. i think i shoul have complained at the time as it was last december but if you go there DONT go into the cubicals lol.

was better when it was smaller. There was more of an atmosphere. Also the Bouncers were alot friendlier than they are now. Especially in comparison with the current bouncers, one of which should be in jail for beating up a friend of mine for no reason! Since then i have never been back, and i recommend that people stay clear of the place.

after a late night visit to binks at the w-end i can confirm it has changed 4 the better.the band rocked through a class set of covers and i ended up sweaty and steamin nicely.u can even get a sit down pizza above the pub till 5 in the mornin.cool.
