The Lewis Chessmen are going on tour! The Chessmen represent one of the most significant archaeological discoveries ever made in Scotland. This new exhibition casts fresh light on their significance and explores their possible origins.
Discover where the chess pieces were found and weigh up the myths and theories surrounding them. What do the intricately-carved characters tell us about society at the time they were made? The exhibition brings together chess pieces from the British Museum and National Museums Scotland. New research explores the enduring mystery and intrigue of these iconic artefacts.

EXHIBITION: JOAN MITCHELL - - Inverleith House is delighted to announce that this summer it will present the first museum exhibition in the UK devoted to the artist Joan Mitchell (1925–1992) – one of the most important and singular American painters of the post war period, whose influence and stature are gaining increasing recognition today.
On show at Inverleith House, widely regarded as one of the most beautiful galleries in the UK, the exhibition comprises seven paintings on canvas and five works on paper, (from public and private collections in Europe and America) made throughout the artist’s career and it considers Mitchell’s work in light of her love of nature and poetry.
The exhibition is presented as part of the 2010 Edinburgh Art Festival.

WOLF PARADE, DESERTERS DESERVE DEATH - -

7:00pm, Cabaret Voltaire, Tickets £12.50. The members of Wolf Parade met in Victoria, B.C., where Dan, Spencer, and Arlen were all playing in local bands. After devoting themselves to their respective projects and losing touch, Spencer and Dan reconnected in Montreal, where Spencer was living next door to the telemarketing company that Dan worked for. “Spencer and I were spending a lot of time hanging out” says Dan. “And were like, Oh, we should start a band.” The two began rehearsing songs in Spencer’s apartment. As they had written songs separately, the original idea was that Spencer and Dan would be in each others bands: Spencer was planning on forming Sunset Rubdown, which is now his primary other band, and Dan wanted to start “a rock band”. It was around this time that they were offered a gig opening for a Belgian band- “a terrible Sterolab clone” – in Montreal. “So our friend calls us and says, “Okay I got you guys a show, you’re playing in eight days,” says Dan. “So Spencer and I kind of flipped out, and were like, Well, we need a drummer. And, at that time, I don’t think Spencer had ever sung in front of an audience before.” They called Arlen, who learned the eight-song set the day before the show. Some notable fans were in attendance at their debut, including Win Butler and Regine Chassagne from Arcade Fire. The band later added sound manipulator Hadji Bakara, and the rest, as they say, is history. “After the show, [Spencer and I] decided to do it as one thing”, says Dan.

The Pattern Theory met through a common love of instrumental music and a desire to combine the beauty of rhythmical complexity with the emotional impact of minimal harmonies and melodies. Formed in Leeds, England in spring 2007 they self-released their first EP (EP1), which received excellent reviews (including The Guardian and Drowned in Sound) and extensive radio play (including Steve Lamacq’s BBC Radio One show), they re-located to Berlin in 2008. They have toured throughout Europe and have shared stages with Icy Demons, Adem, Library Tapes and The Drift. Damo Suzuki chose The Pattern Theory as his backing band on his world tour, accompanying him with a fully improvised set. Live, the band play six instruments simultaneously, with no backing tracks being used at any point. Outside of The Pattern Theory, James drums for The Declining Winter (Hood side project), Carl works with Andrew McInnis (ex-Asva, a Sunn O))) side project) and Lukas plays with Tanita Tikaram.

Three young Dubliners took on the world, with music fashioned from the emotional detritus of their own hard lives raised up by a love of pop, rock, hip hop and soul. In two years they notched up a handful of hit singles, including ‘We Cry’, ‘Breakeven’ and ‘The Man Who Can’t Be Moved’. 7:00pm, The Bongo Club, Tickets £15.25. The music pouring out of Scotland in the mid 1980´s was a primitive force that could be just as naive as it was brilliant. The Vaselines brought Eugene Kelly´s edgy, scratchy guitar work together with Frances McKee´s poetic melancholia. Their vocals were a shining light with Eugene´s dry monotone trading off Frances´s more charming female voice. The Vaselines carnal obsessions were given as much time as their off-kilter pop experiments. While sexual candour has rarely been the preserve of emotionally sensitive indie types, drawing on the Velvet Underground´s rhythmic down-stroke and lustful subject matter, The Vaselines´ sense of brazen mischief is exemplified by their very name. Though they have only one album to their credit and broke up the week that album was released in 1989, The Vaselines have etched a special place in the hearts of many. Chief amongst them was Kurt Cobain who with Nirvana covered three of their songs on their Incesticide and MTV Unplugged albums.

Benga (real name Beni Uthman) is a uk music producer from Croydon, and is part of the Big Apple Records label. Being inspired by Wookie and an associate of producer Skream, Benga released his debut 12", "Skank," in late 2002. A co-production with Skream called "The Judgement" appeared on Big Apple in early 2003, and also on "Dubstep Allstars Vol.1", mixed by Hatcha and then Benga began his own label — Benga Beats — and released the three-track 12" Benga Beats, Vol. 1 in 2004. He has been described as an important name in the development of the dubstep style for his fusion of the already existing South London dubstep sound with the newer East London born grime sound, and was also one of the first dubstep producers when the style was emerging in the early 2000s. He has been featured on a variety of compilations including Mary Anne Hobbs´s The Warrior Dubz, Tempa´s The Roots of Dubstep and the BBC 1Xtra anniversary mix. In 2008 he published his album Diary of An Afro Warrior.

At 13:30 our parade of steam traction engines, racing cars, scooters and more – will go around the site so that you can see these mechanical marvels in action.
In the Tech Tent meet research engineers who will wow you with talks, workshops and things to see and try relating to the cutting edge of technology. From wave power to medicine delivered by nano bubbles and fossil bird brains to cruise missiles the world of the future will be revealed. This tent is made possible by an Ingenious Grant from the Royal Academy of Engineering.

Prior to a distinguished solo career, he was the lead singer, principal composer and bassist of the 1970s/1980s rock band The Police. Sumner was born in Wallsend, near Newcastle upon Tyne in northeast England, to Audrey Cowell and her husband, Ernest Sumner. He is the eldest of four children and has a brother, Philip, and two sisters, Angela and Anita. His father managed a dairy, and as a boy Sumner would often assist him with the early morning milk delivery rounds. Sumner was raised in the Roman Catholic tradition, due to the influence of his paternal grandmother, who was from an Irish family. Sumner attended St. Cuthbert’s Grammar School in Newcastle upon Tyne, and then the University of Warwick, but did not graduate. During this time, he would often sneak into nightclubs like the Club-A-Go-Go. Here he would watch acts like Jack Bruce and Jimi Hendrix who would later influence his music. After jobs as a bus conductor, a construction labourer, and a tax officer, he attended Northern Counties Teachers’ Training College, which later became part of Northumbria University, from 1971 to 1974. From an early age, Gordon Sumner knew that he wanted to be a musician. His first music gigs were wherever he could get a job, performing evenings, weekends, and during vacations from college and teaching. He played with local jazz bands such as the Phoenix Jazzmen, the Newcastle Big Band, and Last Exit.

Ferguson was drummer in the Matt Stagger Band when he met Coleman (originally from Cheltenham, Gloucestershire) in Notting Hill, London.
In early 1979, after Coleman was briefly keyboard player in that band, he and Ferguson defected to form Killing Joke with Geordie and bassist Martin “Youth” Glover. According to Coleman, their manifesto was to “define the exquisite beauty of the atomic age in terms of style, sound and form”.
Killing Joke are named after a Monty Python sketch. Youth and Big Paul Ferguson has since rejoined the band in a live performance capacity at least.

MARTIN STEPHENSON AND THE DAINTEES - -

Martin Stephenson convened The Daintees in the early 80´s, the name deliberately chosen as a response to the humourlessness and angst of much of the music of the time. The Daintees became one of the first bands to sign with the Newcastle-upon-Tyne based independent label, Kitchenware, and their debut single, "Roll On Summertime" was a sparkling, cheerful item that announced the arrival of a considerable new talent. After Kitchenware packed The Daintees to London Records, they released the marvellous debut album, "Boat To Bolivia" (1985), under the Production auspices of future Pixies/Bunnymen/James sound man Gil Norton. The album positively burst with excellent, rootsy pop songs, boasting a veritable rainbow of styles, sung and played with a youthful enthusiasm and warmth that paradoxically, perhaps, displayed a mature, unique Songwriting voice. Songs such as the bittersweet "Crocodile Cryer", the alcoholic´s lament "Little Red Bottle", the emphatic "Running Waters" and the haunting ballad "Rain" further underscored the impression that "Roll On Summertime" had made. Lengthy bouts of touring saw Stephenson and the band taking their music to the people, and they loved it, carving an awesome reputation as a live act. Subsequent albums were "Gladsome, Humour, and Blue" (1987), "Salutation Road" (1989), and "The Boy´s Heart" (1992).
