HOT CHIP -
- 7:00pm, HMV Picture House, Tickets £20.25. Hailing from London, Hot Chip entered the picture with the release of their 2000 debut, Mexico. The EP was released by Victory Garden Records, a label owned and operated by members of London´s resident lo-fi psychedelic rock institution, Southall Riot. The Mexico EP was a hypnotic wash of subtle -- nearly subliminal -- pulse-like techno beats, acoustic guitars, and plinky pianos, but the vocals were the true star of the show (no small feat in a musical climate overrun with disaffected Lou Reed-esque mumblers and bland Eddie Vedder impersonators). The voices of Alexis Taylor and Joe Goddard are a fine study in contrast. Taylor offers dreamy, effortless falsettos that cut to the heart of the beauty of performers like Jeff Buckley and Nick Drake (minus any of the pretentiousness of Radiohead or even Coldplay or the bland vocal acrobatics of Remy Zero). Meanwhile, scattered throughout the record (and in the occasional duet), Goddard offers a tone that sounds a bit more world-weary and at times almost gruff in comparison to Taylor, calling to mind Damon Albarn´s cool monotone tendencies. 2002´s self-released Sanfrandisco E-Pee showed the band dabbling in more playful sounds, from the beatbox dubbing of the title track to the closing notes of "Fanta," in which Taylor pleads with the listener to "make sounds of the summer." DIVORCE + BITCHES -
- 7:00pm, Sneaky Pete´s, Tickets £5.00. A VALENTINES DAY MUSICAL MASSACRE!!!!! Previous gigs in 2009 with the likes of Part Chimp, Foot Village, HEALTH, Deerhoof and Comanechi, plus a debut 10″ ep release on Optimo Music are all conspiring to make 2010 their year. BITCHES are a brutal bass-and-drums, boy-and-girl duo from London, celebrating their debut 7″ release (following their initial cassette-only EP released on Foot Village’s awesome Deathbomb Arc label) with a swift rape-and-pillage visit to Scotland. Unrestrained volume and unbridled brutality are mixed together in an epic, bass-heavy attack, all the while shards of punk-infused melody fight to be heard. If Lightning Bolt & Big Business were fused with Bikini Kill & The Fall it might come close to the battering-ram assault of BITCHES! Click Here To Buy Your Tickets Online!

DAVE GORMAN - SIT DOWN, PEDAL, PEDAL, STOP AND STAND UP -
- 8:00pm, Festival Theatre Edinburgh, Tickets 18.50. Dave Gorman: Sit Down, Pedal, Stop and Stand Up Dave Gorman (Genius, BBC Radio 4 and BBC Two) is going back on the road, five years after he last toured the UK. And when we say "on the road" we really mean it. A lot of acts will tell you they`re covering the length and breadth of the country... but Dave`s really doing it. This tour will see the intrepid comedian covering the extremes of the British mainland as he travels from this land`s southernmost point to its northernmost tip, taking in the most easterly and westerly points along the way. If nothing else he`ll get to see four lighthouses. Oh, and did we mention he`s going to do the whole thing on his push bike? The travelling, we mean. Not the gigs. That`d be silly. 1500 miles. 32 days in the saddle. 32 nights on the stage. His Mum`s told him not to do it but he won`t listen. It`s not a show about the journey. Dave may be widely acclaimed as the pioneer of documentary comedy but with this show he`s going back to his roots as a straight up, one-man-and-a-mic, stand-up whose "material is mercilessly sharp and original" (The Times). OCEAN COLOUR SCENE -
- 7:00pm, HMV Picture House, Tickets £23.00. Falling between the energetic pop/rock of mod revival and the psychedelic experimentations of Traffic, Ocean Colour Scene came to be one of the leading bands of the traditionalist, post-Oasis British rock of the mid-´90s. Although they had formed in the late ´80s and had several hits during the height of Madchester in the early ´90s, the band didn´t earn a large following until 1996, when their second album, Moseley Shoals, became a multi-platinum success story in the U.K. Their ascent was greatly aided by Paul Weller and Oasis´ Noel Gallagher, who both publicly praised Ocean Colour Scene for keeping the flame of real rock & roll burning during the ´90s. And, according to one specific definition, they were right, since Ocean Colour Scene was nothing if not rock & roll traditionalists, drawing heavily from British Invasion pop, psychedelia, soul, R&B, and blues-rock to create a reverential homage to classic rock. Their devotion to trad rock may have earned them decidedly mixed reviews, but that was the very thing that earned them a sizable following. Click Here To Buy Your Tickets Online!

THE RUSSIAN STATE BALLET OF SIBERIA - GISELLE -
- 7:30pm, Edinburgh Playhouse, Tickets £15.00 - £32.50. The Russian State Ballet of Siberia is based in Krasnoyarsk, and was formed in 1978. It comprises about 45 dancers and 30 musicians. (Note that despite sharing an artistic director in Sergei Bobrov and the occasional dancer, this does appear to be a completely different company from the Siberian Ballet Theatre, based in Tchelyabinsk and founded in 1956, which has also toured in the UK.) After Giselle´s appearance (Anna Aulle), the interplay between her and Albrecht and later the villagers (all female at this point, and dressed in some rather attractive dark-pastel multicoloured dresses) continues much as we are used to, except that her mother does not appear until where her mime scene would normally be – but where is it?! The programme usefully fills us in on what the mime says, but the whole narrative and its music are omitted – far from the first time that this has happened with Russian companies and mime. ANGIE STONE -
- 7:00pm, HMV Picture House, Tickets £26.75. A singer, a self-taught keyboardist, and a prolific songwriter, Angie Stone´s first claim to fame was being the lead vocalist on Vertical Hold´s smooth urban dance track "Seems You´re Much Too Busy." An R&B Top 40 hit during the summer of 1993, it eventually led to a solo career, and her debut album Black Diamond was issued in 1999 by Arista. In six years, Stone had definitely gained an old-school, autobiographical vibe, exemplified by her hit ballad "No More Rain (In This Cloud)," which has samples from Gladys Knight and the Pips´ "Neither One of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye)." Contributors included Lenny Kravitz and former Tribe Called Quest member Ali Shaheed Muhammad as producers, and Stone´s ex-boyfriend D´Angelo as a vocal guest on "Everyday." His experience on the stage grew as he formed Half a Guy, a funk rock group with a quirky edge, with fellow band mates Matt Buchanan, Dave Elvy and Nicola Crawshaw. He then spent time recording and gigging under the name Newton Battenberg Faulkner, where he played the Lapagestock festival Click Here To Buy Your Tickets Online!
THE RUSSIAN STATE BALLET OF SIBERIA - THE SLEEPING BEAUTY -
- 7:30pm, Edinburgh Playhouse, Tickets £15.00 - £32.50. the Russian State Ballet of Siberia is a thoroughly traditional working of the Tchaikovsky crowd-pleaser. Yet far from being a stuffy museum piece - it has all the freshness of new paint. Dazzling costumes and a largely young dance troupe give this enduring favourite an exciting and dynamic feel. Everyone´s familiar with the simple storyline with the feelgood factor. A fragile princess, played beautifully by Anna Aulle, who looks like she could snap in two, a handsome prince to come to her rescue, in the shape of the brilliant Alexander Butrimovich, and a brilliant supporting cast. And all played out to the strains of the immaculately turned-out Russian State Ballet Orchestra, led by Anatoly Tchepurnoi - an absolute joy. And, of course, it helps that they all live happily ever after… As far as the dancing´s concerned, there are no great surprises - there´s everything from the authentic court dances, classical ballet technique, mime scenes and processions galore. There is even a bit of humour injected, too. The evil Fairy Carabosse, played by Demid Zykov, a strapping six-footer, is both scary and captivating, and his comic scenes with the knitting needles prompted ripples of laughter. He dominated in his scenes, his swishing cloak adding to the high drama. The beautiful costumes add to the spectacle and bring colour and life to the production. Full-length gowns, cloaks and feather head-dresses in golds and brocades for the court scenes and fairies dressed in pastel shades of mint green and pale pink and lilac. For almost a decade, he struggled to support his wife, Leba, and their two children but found salvation in moving to Britain, where he signed to Elton John´s Rocket Records label, and remarkably returned to the top of the US charts in 1974 with ´Laughter In The Rain´ - remaining a national treasure there as well as in the UK ever since. ´Laughter in The Rain´ - a remarkable story of triumph against the odds. JOAN ARMATRADING -
- 8:00pm, Queens Hall Edinburgh, Tickets £29.50. Born on the island of St. Kitts, British singer/songwriter Joan Armatrading was her country`s first black woman to make commercial inroads into her chosen genre, spicing her take on folk with bits of soul and reggae, and has had a remarkably long, consistent career. Emigrating to England in 1958, Armatrading met lyricist Pam Nestor in a touring production of Hair, and the two began collaborating on material later featured on Armatrading`s 1972 debut, Whatever`s for Us. The two ended their partnership afterward, and Armatrading resurfaced in 1975 with Back to the Night. Featuring former members of Fairport Convention, Joan Armatrading catapulted the singer into the U.K. Top 20 and produced her only Top Ten single, "Love and Affection." Armatrading`s subsequent albums sold well in the U.K. to her newly established fan base but only respectably in the U.S., where it took her until 1980 to have a real hit (the all-electric Me Myself I). The Key also did quite well, but Armatrading remained largely a cult artist with a small but devoted following in America, never quite achieving the stardom she had in Britain. Armatrading has been successful enough to record regularly into the new millennium and tour, releasing Lovers Speak on Denon Records in 2003, a concert set, Live: All the Way from America, on Savoy in 2004, and her first all-blues project, Into the Blues, in 2007 on 429 Records.
