EXHIBITIONS: ARCTIC CIRCUS + SKYLIGHTS - From Saturday, March 22, 2008 to Saturday, May 10, 2008 -
Tues-Sat 10am-6pm. Free admission. Edinburgh Printmakers, 23 Union Street, Edinburgh, EH1 3LR. 0131 557 2479
Gallery 1: Gill Tyson, Artic Circus - This evocative exhibition of lithographs and screenprints by Gill Tyson explores the archipelago of islands off the north west coast of Norway, within the Arctic Circle, called the Lofoten Islands. The images in this exhibition focus on the harsh beauty of this once remote and thriving sea dominated community. Inspired by a visit at the time of the Midnight Sun, these prints capture the ethereal light of the Arctic summer, and reflect a harmony between the industrial and domestic human activity and the awesome, wild landscapes.
Galleries 2 & 3 - Alastair Clark, Skylights - Inspired by the experience of witnessing of the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights, this exhibition explores the luminous energy of this phenomenon through works in a variety of media from screenprints, digital prints, light boxes and animation.
These works were created as reconstructions or visualisations of the Aurora Borealis employing different vantage points that offer an unnatural perspective and thereby a transformed or heightened experience of this exciting spectacle. Observed as gestures of light flashing across the night sky, these works convey the luminous glow of monochromatic colour harmonies inherent in this wonderful natural phenomenon.
Artist Talk - 26th April at 2pm, Alastair Clark will discuss the work in his exhibition and his artistic practice.
Accompanying courses - Take inspiration from the lithographs in these two exhibitions and have a go at the process yourself.
If you require assistance with physical access or interpretation please contact prior to your visit..

JUDY COLLINS - Thursday, June 05, 2008 - Queens Hall, 7.00pm, Tickets £17.00, One of the major interpretive singers of the 1960s, Judy Collins has recorded songs by such celebrated songwriters as Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Randy Newman, Joan Baez, and Pete Seeger. Yet over the course of her illustrious 47-year career, she has recorded only one song — In My Life — by the most legendary songwriting team of them all: John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
Hard to believe, isnt it? says Collins, who recorded In My Life in 1966 and included it on her groundbreaking album of the same title. I think I was meant to wait and do their songs all at once. She is referring, of course, to her new CD, Judy Collins Sings Lennon & McCartney, her 44th album, out on her own label, Wildflower Records. Sung in Collins pure, angelic soprano, the 12 tracks, all familiar classics from the Beatles colossal catalog, sound just as inspired today as they did 40 years ago. I just chose what I like, Collins says, though we did limit the selections to Lennon and McCartney. These are their short, sweet, perfect songs.
